Porcelain veneers are often used to treat teeth with deep stains. Discoloration caused by antibiotics, excessive fluoride in water (fluorosis), and similar under-the-enamel stains can actually be made more apparent when teeth are whitened. Dental veneers, placed over the front of the teeth, offer a reliable and effective solution for these issues and are often used in conjunction with topical teeth whitening to ensure a consistent and stain-free appearance throughout.

Tooth enamel can be stained by foods and beverages, lifestyle choices, oral hygiene habits, and more. Tooth whitening is often sufficient for topical stains and can create a bright and stain-free appearance for several months. Tooth enamel cannot be made stain-resistant, however. Over time, even with proper care, additional whitening services will be needed.

Porcelain veneers are different. The material itself is resistant to stains. In fact, it’s fairly difficult to stain dental veneers at all. Difficult is not impossible, though, making proper daily care an essential aspect of maintaining your results.

Caring for Dental Veneers

Veneers can (and should) be brushed in the same manner as natural teeth after every meal and snack. To prevent scratching your veneers – which can exacerbate staining – avoid toothpaste with abrasive ingredients such as charcoal or baking soda, and be sure to brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush. While durable, porcelain veneers are not invulnerable. Proper care will be needed to help keep them attractive and in place.

Dental veneers are strong, stain-resistant, and long-lasting, but they cannot be whitened. If one or more of your veneers becomes dingy or damaged, it will need to be replaced. When you come to our office for your routine examinations, we will evaluate the condition of each of your veneers. We can replace individual porcelain veneers as needed to help ensure continuously pleasing results.
