Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease. It occurs when plaque builds up on your teeth and gums, causing your gums to become inflamed. The condition is most commonly caused by poor oral hygiene practices that allow this plaque to build up.

Common symptoms of gingivitis include:

  • Soft, puffy gums
  • Swollen gums
  • Tender gums
  • Receding gum line
  • Bleeding when you brush and floss
  • Bad breath
  • A change in gum color from pink to red

It’s important to understand that gingivitis doesn’t cause any permanent damage to your teeth and gums. While your gums are irritated, your teeth are still firmly in place, and no bone damage has occurred yet. However, if left untreated, gingivitis can progress to the more serious form of gum disease called periodontitis.

During periodontitis, the inner layer of your gum tissue pulls away from your teeth, creating pockets that collect debris and become infected. As periodontitis gets worse, the bone and connective tissue that holds your teeth in place begins to break down. Ultimately, this can lead to tooth loss and irreversible bone damage.

Due to the serious nature of gum disease, it’s important to visit Dr. Frank for your regularly scheduled dental checkups and teeth cleanings. During these visits, Dr. Frank will remove any plaque that has built up on your teeth and evaluate your gums for early warning signs of gingivitis. If he notices that you are developing gum disease, he’ll recommend the ideal periodontal treatment plan to restore optimal levels of oral health.
