One of the many reasons you should see a dentist twice a year is to check for the presence of gum disease. Gum disease can manifest as gingivitis or as periodontitis. While gingivitis often responds to improved oral health habits, advanced forms of gum disease such as periodontitis usually require more aggressive treatment.
Gum disease can cause a variety of symptoms, including:
- Red or swollen gums
- Pain or sensitivity around the gum line
- Recession of the gums from the teeth
- Bleeding after brushing or flossing
- Loose or separating teeth
Gingivitis is the mildest form of gum disease and can usually be treated with improved home oral hygiene habits, use of antibacterial mouthwash, and regular cleanings.
Periodontitis, on the other hand, usually requires more intensive periodontal treatment. The most common approach is for Dr. Frank to clean the roots of your teeth and remove bacteria and toxic material from beneath the gum line.
In addition to traditional deep cleaning techniques such as scaling and root planing, we also offer Arestin treatments. Arestin is an antibiotic that kills bacteria which are responsible for gum disease. Your Arestin treatment is administered to the infected pockets beneath your gum line in order to eliminate any infection in the region. Arestin works on a time-release formula, ensuring you receive the consistent dosage necessary to achieve results.
