Studies have shown that nearly half of U.S. adults make a resolution on New Year’s Eve. This is not a new practice: it dates back to 45 BCE when Julius Caesar first introduced the Julian Calendar, though it has evolved over the years from a promise of good behavior to a commitment to make positive changes.

Very few people keep their resolutions. In fact, a recent study found that only around 7% of those who make a resolution follow through. This may result from resolutions that are far too lofty, unformed, or vague to achieve. Why not try an easy one, then? Something like “taking better care of my teeth”?

Optimizing Your Oral Health

Most people have room for improvement when it comes to their oral hygiene routines. Even people with a consistent routine and strong commitment to oral health may fall short when it comes to daily care – and now is a great time to review and assess your daily habits and optimize your oral health. Fortunately, this is an incredibly easy thing to do.

First and foremost, brush your teeth after every meal and snack. Because some foods and beverages can soften tooth enamel, it is a good idea to wait for at least 30-minutes before brushing and to use a soft-bristled toothbrush. If you have restorations, you will want to avoid abrasive toothpaste ingredients like baking soda and charcoal to prevent damage.

Brushing can remove surface stains, debris, and bacteria from the teeth. Flossing removes those things from in between the teeth. You should floss before you brush at least twice a day. For the sake of ease, consider flossing before your first and last brush of the day.

Remember to reduce or eliminate your intake of sugary foods and beverages, simple carbohydrates, and processed foods as well. This will help to keep your teeth, gums, and body in peak health.
