If you have a missing tooth, if you’re about to lose a tooth, or if you have a tooth that is severely damaged due to decay or injury, you could be a good candidate for Hoboken implant dentistry, but sometimes there are specific issues that need to be addressed.

For the majority of people, dental implants can be placed in just a few short visits to our office. In some cases though, there may be existing factors that will need to be addressed before the implant process can begin. Though there are several health requirements to be met, the two main considerations that will determine your candidacy are:

  • Jawbone Integrity - The health of the jawbone is one of the primary factors that need to be examined to determine if you are a dental implant candidate. Because the implant is placed into the jawbone, there must be sufficient structure to support it and to allow for osseointegration. In many cases, the density of the jawbone can be improved through treatment so the implant can be placed.
  • Gum Disease - The second major consideration for dental implant candidacy is the health of the gums and oral tissues. The dental implant procedure requires surgical placement, so the gums and oral tissues must be healthy in order to heal properly and prevent infection that can spread to the jaw or become systemic. For this reason, gum disease must be treated before the implant can be placed.

Fortunately, while some patients may require treatment prior to implant placement, with the proper assessment and care, nearly everyone can enjoy the many benefits of dental implants.
