Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ/TMD) is the name given to several different conditions that can impact the alignment of the jaw. Many of the symptoms associated with this disorder may seem to originate elsewhere, making TMJ a commonly overlooked or misdiagnosed condition.
During your routine visits to our Hoboken office, Dr. DePaola can perform a hands-on evaluation of your jaw to check for signs of misalignment, but knowing which symptoms to look for can be useful in between visits to help you determine when it may be time to call for a neuromuscular evaluation.
Symptoms of TMJ
There are myriad TMJ symptoms that can occur in the face and throughout the body. Some of the most common include:
- Noises in the jaw. Clicking and popping noises when opening and shutting the mouth or grinding noises when chewing are often a clear indication of a TMJ disorder
- Pain and/or swelling around the jaw. Jaw and facial pain or swelling suggest the presence of TMJ and should be brought to the immediate attention of Dr. DePaola
- Chronic headaches. TMJ headaches may produce symptoms similar to tension headaches or migraines, but they are not the same thing. Chronic headaches caused by TMJ may continue to occur until proper alignment is restored
In addition to these common TMJ symptoms, many patients experience ear ringing, dizziness, neck and back pain, and uneven tooth wear. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is a good idea to schedule a thorough TMJ diagnostic screening to determine if a neuromuscular dentistry treatment could help.
Treating TMJ
TMJ is treated through a number of modalities. At our office, we have enjoyed great success with non-surgical options such as occlusal guards, various orthotics, and advanced restorative dentistry services. Customized to meet the exact needs of the patient, our TMJ treatment options are designed to restore alignment and comfort, and to help prevent the issue from recurring.
